University of Arizona Machine Learning Program Continues to Rank Among Top Graduate Offerings
The University of Arizona’s Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) continues to rank among the nation’s top machine learning graduate programs, earning a place in the top 15 of TechGuide’s 2025 rankings of best master’s degrees in machine learning. This recognition as the #14 program in the country reflects the program’s ongoing commitment to cutting-edge, interdisciplinary training in both the theoretical foundations and applied dimensions of machine learning and information science.
Offered through the College of Information Science (InfoSci), the STEM-designated MSIS program prepares students to address complex challenges at the intersection of data, computation and society. With two focused subplans—Machine Learning and Human-Centered Computing—the degree can be completed in as few as 18 months, offering students flexibility and academic rigor. TechGuide highlights the program’s strengths in areas such as artificial intelligence, natural language processing and data mining.
“Our program closely integrates key foundational training in machine learning-related topics with applied, hands-on and active learning opportunities spread throughout the curriculum,” says Cristian Román-Palacios, assistant professor and MSIS faculty advisor. “We’re committed not only to supporting our students through a thoughtfully designed curriculum, but also to adapting that curriculum in response to industry trends and the real-world needs our students share with us.”
This student-centered and adaptive approach positions graduates for a wide range of career paths—from artificial intelligence programming and research to data science and software engineering. The curriculum includes opportunities to explore neural networks, deep learning, human-centered design and natural language processing, all while developing proficiency in tools such as Python, R and SQL.
“The future of machine learning depends not just on code and computation, but on the people who understand how these systems affect our lives,” says Catherine Brooks, interim dean of the College of Information Science. “Our graduates leave equipped with both technical acumen and ethical insight, prepared to address the world’s most pressing information challenges.”
TechGuide’s rankings evaluate programs on academic strength, curricular relevance, affordability and post-graduation outcomes. Arizona’s consistent presence in the top tier confirms the MSIS program’s national leadership in preparing the next generation of machine learning professionals.
As the field evolves, the College of Information Science remains committed to shaping a future in which technology is developed—and deployed—with insight, responsibility and human impact in mind.
