The University of Arizona Handbook for Appointed Personnel (UHAP) outlines the official policies for faculty duties and responsibilities at The University of Arizona.
All faculty evaluations in the College of Information Science are conducted in accordance with the guidelines outlined in UHAP 3.3. Probationary reviews will follow the same procedures, with the criteria for evaluation reflecting the individual faculty member’s time in rank.
The College of Information Science is an academic unit founded on the interdisciplinary study of information. Recommendations for promotion and tenure should be congruent with related practices prevailing in outstanding colleges and schools of information science and those designated as iSchools as well as general norms and practices in the field. Given that information science research is often interdisciplinary, and work may be disseminated in diverse locations and in multiple forms, the final evaluation of a candidate will be based on the academic quality, quantity and impact of the work, independent of its disciplinary or substantive content.
The promotion and tenure process begins at the unit level and continues through college to the university level. Colleges and candidates are responsible for ensuring that the dossier is prepared in line with the guidelines.
In the College of Information Science, the Faculty Affairs Coordinator and the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs will assist faculty members and supervise the promotion and review processes. Working together with the candidates, they will ensure the quality of dossiers, compliance with deadlines and consistency in the processes.
At the end of every spring semester, the Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs releases annual guidelines and checklists to help in preparing promotion and tenure dossiers.
The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs also holds workshops each spring designed to provide information about the promotion process. The workshops explain the university's review procedures and offer guidance on presenting the promotion and tenure dossier. All candidates for promotion and/or tenure, promotion committees, heads and directors are encouraged to attend the workshops. A candidate for a third-year review will also find these workshops helpful in becoming acquainted with the dossier preparation requirements at the University of Arizona.
Review, Promotion & Tenure (RPT) is used to conduct faculty career reviews including third-year reviews, as well as promotions and tenure reviews. For more information, visit the Faculty Affairs Promotion website.
