Job Description

The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) is seeking a University of Arizona School of Information graduate intern interested in gaining experience processing archival collections. Under the supervision of archives staff at CCP, part of Arizona Arts at the University of Arizona, the intern will be assigned an archival collection to process. The intern will conduct a collection survey, create a processing plan, arrange, describe, and rehouse collection materials, and produce a finding aid in ArchivesSpace. This work will contribute to the discoverability of and access to the collection, ultimately providing better user experience.

 

We endeavor to support interns in their particular areas of interest and desires for development while also training on foundational work within the archives. Interns may also collaborate with CCP staff to expand and enhance their experiences through engagement on a variety of other tasks -- for example, participating in harmful language reviews, contributing to documentation of best practices, or conducting research to apply subject access to collections.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

● Works closely with the archivist to carry out processing activities and descriptive work for collections as assigned.

● Work with rare and fragile materials of all formats, with an emphasis on photographic materials.

● Rehouses collection material using archival and preventive conservation best practices.

● Prepares new finding aid to meet current national archival descriptive standards and best practices within ArchivesSpace.

● Implements inclusive and conscientious language/metadata practices.

 

Minimum Qualifications

● Must be enrolled as a graduate student in the School of Information

● Previous or current course work in archives

● Detail-oriented, ability to creatively solve problems, and think outside of the box

● Interest in and aptitude for archival processing and description

● Demonstrated commitment to learning and applying new skills including in the use of technology

● Comfortable working both collaboratively and independently

● Ability to climb ladders and retrieve and shelve boxes weighing up to 40 pounds

 

Preferred Qualifications

· Experience describing archival materials

· Experience using archival management systems such as ArchivesSpace

· Interest in photography

 

Position Details

This position takes place on site at the Center for Creative Photography on the University of Arizona campus.

 

Applicants cannot also have a GA or RA position at any point during the 2024-25 academic year.

 

Start date: January 2025

 

Hours

In coordination with their academic department, the intern will need to complete 135 hours in order to obtain academic credit. Interns will work 10-15 hours per week, which can be flexibly scheduled Monday-Friday from 9:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m.

Audiovisual Collections Management

The Center for Creative Photography (CCP) seeks a current graduate student with an interest in collections management from the School of Information to survey audiovisual (AV) items found throughout CCP’s nearly three hundred archival collections. The intern will have support from archives staff as they learn about AV formats and how staff and users alike use ArchivesSpace. To facilitate future discovery, access, and format migration, interns will enter item level data about AV items into an AirTable base, and update finding aids in ArchivesSpace.

We endeavor to support interns in their particular areas of interest and desires for development while also training on foundational work within the archives. Interns may also collaborate with CCP staff to expand and enhance their experiences through engagement on a variety of other tasks -- for example, participating in harmful language reviews, contributing to documentation of best practices, creating additional staff and/or user documentation, using technology to enhance reference, or creating a more welcoming presence for the Archives in order to encourage more people to engage with research at CCP.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

· Learns about myriad AV formats that have been used in the past eighty+ years and which may be held in CCP’s collections

· Learns best practices for AV item handling and storage

· Learns about the importance of iterative collections management practices within an archives

· Learns about the critical connection between collection description and metadata and their use in the research process

· Develops a new AV survey based on extant AV data

· Surveys AV items in CCP’s archival collections and enters detailed data into AirTable

· Creates and updates item level records for AV items within extant finding aids using ArchivesSpace

· Learns about the basic principles of data analysis and presentation

· Analyzes and visually presents the data they collected during the internship

Getty's Graduate Internship Program

The intern in Collection Platforms & Data (Getty Digital) will gain intensive experience preserving Getty's unique collections and assets in digital format, which include archives of artists, galleries and art historians and audio/video artworks and documentation as well as websites, institutional born-digital records, and research data. The intern’s primary responsibilities will include troubleshooting and testing workflows for ingesting content of all types into a managed system, and developing creative ways to archive complex web experiences, with other projects assigned according to the intern’s particular skills and interests. Specific tasks may include developing preservation plans for file characterization, migration and normalization, performing quality assurance on web archives and troubleshooting technical issues that arise, assessing technical metadata for digital assets, and participating in the drafting of policies and procedures related to digital preservation. 

 

All positions are full-time for 12 months from September 8, 2025 through August 28, 2026. The grant amount is $47,500 for twelve months, plus $1,500 towards relocation expenses. Interns receive seven days of paid vacation and all holidays observed by Getty. Housing is not provided. Support for research travel for up to $2,500 is provided for each participant. Graduate Interns are eligible to enroll in the Getty's health care plan.
