The University of Arizona’s Master of Science in Information Science (MSIS) continues to distinguish itself as a national leader in graduate education, earning the #5 spot in TechGuide’s 2025 ranking of the Best Online Master’s in Machine Learning Programs.

This marks a notable rise from last year, when the program was ranked #11, underscoring the program’s growing reputation for excellence in curriculum design, student outcomes and faculty impact. According to TechGuide, this recognition reflects the university’s “exceptional educational opportunities” and “commitment to excellence” in one of the most competitive fields in technology today.

Offered through the College of Information Science, the STEM-designated MSIS program prepares students to address complex challenges at the intersection of data, computation and society. With two focused subplansMachine Learning and Human-Centered Computing—the degree can be completed in as few as 18 months, offering students flexibility and academic rigor.

Cristian Román-Palacios, assistant professor and MSIS coordinator and advisor, describes the program as “a robust and rewarding pathway for students to pivot their careers into the dynamic field of information science.” He adds, “Whether you're drawn to the algorithmic side of machine learning or the immersive work of user-centered design, our program equips students with the tools to lead in a data-driven world.”

TechGuide, which analyzes verified data from the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the National Center for Education Statistics, ranks programs using a comprehensive methodology that includes affordability, student-to-faculty ratio, admission and graduation rates, and alumni outcomes.

Catherine Brooks, interim dean of the College of Information Science, sees the recognition as affirmation of the program’s broader mission. “We are honored that TechGuide continues to acknowledge the overall excellence and value of our Master’s in Information Science,” Brooks says. “Our graduates leave equipped with both technical acumen and ethical insight, prepared to address the world’s most pressing information challenges.”

As machine learning and data science roles continue to expand across sectors—from healthcare and finance to climate science and national security—graduates of the MSIS program stand at the forefront of innovation.
