When

9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Oct. 31, 2024

Join Open Measures CEO Hank Teran for an online about Open Measures and other open source technology that can be used to conduct social media and other research.

Open Measures is an open source social media listening platform that helps researchers identify online threats like disinformation and extremism to mitigate offline harms. It is used by academics, journalists and security teams to contextualize the spread of information from platform to platform. Open Measures focuses on fringe, or alt-tech, social media networks. In the past, Open Measures has been used in investigations looking into topics ranging from an influence operation by the Russian Wagner Group on Telegram in the Sahel to a widespread disinformation campaign that has resulted in the dismantling of a bipartisan initiative to maintain U.S. voter rolls.

In this workshop, Teran will detail the alt-tech landscape and suggest reasons for why it's worth investigating platforms that have decentralized or non-existent content moderation policies. He'll also provide background on what open source technology is and why Open Measures has chosen to maintain its open source footprint. Participants will engage in hands-on exercises via live demonstrations, exploring the tools that Open Measures has made publicly available for ongoing research and analysis. Because this level of research work can be emotionally difficult, the workshop will also direct participants to resources designed to help researchers prioritize their physical and mental health. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have gained a stronger understanding of how to utilize open source technology, including the Open Measures platform, for their own areas of interest.

Both the 9:30-10:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. - noon sessions are the same—attend only one session.
