LIS 552 Cultural Heritage Collections: Object Itineraries, Curation, and Management

This course explores cultural heritage objects as dynamic sources of information that carry rich histories of movement, context, and meaning, which shape collective memory. It emphasizes the concept of provenance, examining the journey of objects from creation to preservation, focusing on their role in cultural heritage collections. Students will engage with practical challenges, methods, and ethical considerations of documenting and managing cultural heritage materials, with consideration for intangible heritage, landmarks, and community knowledge. The course integrates cross-disciplinary practices, preparing students for ethical stewardship, ensuring the preservation of both historical and cultural contexts. Key topics include the relationship between place, meaning, and identity; the significance of object provenance; and the use of technologies in managing and transmitting heritage. By tracing object itineraries students will uncover the complex cultural interactions that shape the curation and preservation of our collective past.
