Position Overview

The Valente Branch of the Cambridge Public Library seeks a dynamic and dedicated Staff Librarian for Teens to deliver outstanding library services to patrons of all ages, with a focus on teens and tweens (ages 11-18). This position involves direct patron services, programming, outreach, and collection development, all while promoting the Library’s mission of inclusion and equity.


Key Responsibilities

Patron Services

  • Provide professional reference, readers' advisory, and technology assistance.
  • Offer circulation services and enforce library policies effectively.
  • Develop expertise in youth literature, media, and new technology.

Collections

  • Select, evaluate, and maintain collections adhering to the library's development policy.
  • Promote library resources through displays, book lists, and programming.

Programs and Outreach

  • Design, present, and evaluate engaging programs tailored to teens and tweens.
  • Conduct outreach to community groups and host library visits.
  • Foster partnerships with local organizations serving youth and families.

Leadership

  • Collaborate with library staff on strategic initiatives.
  • Supervise pages and provide mentorship and training as needed.
  • Oversee library operations in the absence of senior staff.

Equity and Inclusion

  • Actively apply anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) principles in all duties.
  • Address the needs of marginalized and underserved populations.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Education: Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited MLS program.
  • Experience: Demonstrated experience working with teens and diverse populations.
  • Skills:
    • Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills.
    • Knowledge of youth literature, media, and digital resources.
    • Cultural sensitivity and commitment to equitable service delivery.
    • Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic environments.

Preferred:

  • Professional library experience.
  • Fluency in a language other than English.

Physical Requirements

  • Operate standard office equipment.
  • Transport carts and carry baskets of materials (up to 30 pounds).
  • Shelve materials at various heights.
  • Focus amidst interruptions and moderate noise levels.

Work Schedule

  • Workweek: 37.5 hours, including evening and weekend shifts. Participation in a system-wide Saturday rotation is required.
  • Initial Schedule:
    • Monday: 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM
    • Tuesday: 11:30 AM - 8:00 PM
    • Wednesday - Friday: 9:30 AM - 6:00 PM (Friday off on Saturday rotation weeks)
    • Saturday: 11:30 AM - 5:00 PM (rotation #2)
