At a glance
ASU Library seeks an intern interested in gaining hands-on experience in working with University Archives. Internship training will include experience with reference, processing, donor relations, digitization, and outreach. The intern may work with the University Archivist on projects such as:
● Responding to reference inquiries, including the reference interview, follow-up, and fulfillment
● Pre-processing and appraising incoming collections
● Arrangement and description of collections
● Developing digital projects and collections in ASU Library’s digital repository, including the creation of metadata
● Promoting University Archives collections via blog posts and social media
● Updating Library Guides where necessary
● Assist with outreach opportunities and instruction services
Learning Objectives:
● Gain practical project experience in an academic and professional library environment.
● Acquire experience in archival reference work and donor relations
● Understand basic archival workflow of access, description, and preservation of archival material within institutional archives
● Understand professional practices and the importance of community outreach
Skills Required:
● Currently enrolled and/or a recent graduate of an ALA-accredited MLS program, or
a graduate-level degree from a related career field
● Basic knowledge of archival practices
● Excellent verbal and written communication skills
● Flexibility, eagerness to learn, and passion for ASU history
Location: This is an in-person position. Travel to ASU's Hayden Library, Tempe campus is required. https://lib.asu.edu/locations/hayden
This position is open to students currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS program. Recent graduates will also be considered. Course credit is available for students in accredited MLS programs.
