    • Monday: 9:30am-2:30pm
    • Wednesday: 4-9pm

Job Description

Reports to: Youth & Teen Services Supervisor

The Novi Public Library, recognized for its innovation and excellent service, is seeking a passionate intern to join its team. You will be working in a diverse and fast-paced library, gaining hands-on experience while serving a community of over 65,000 people.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Work with a mentor to gain exposure to various public librarian tasks.
  • Provide reference services, readers' advisory, and computer assistance.
  • Participate in collection development and maintenance.
  • Assist with programming services tailored to the community's needs.
  • Engage in community outreach.

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Enforce library policies and respond to emergencies.
  • Collaborate across departments to achieve library goals.
  • Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in all library services.
  • Adapt to changing priorities and resolve issues positively.

Job Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree in Library/Information Science from an ALA-accredited school.
  • Able to commit to at least 1 year.
  • Knowledge of adult, teen, and youth literature.
  • Proficient in MS Office, Google Workspace, and other related technologies.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
  • A valid Michigan driver’s license may be required.

Special Projects

Intern projects may include:

  • Updating reading lists for all age groups, including seniors.
  • Verifying author and title collections.
  • Recommending new materials for collection development.

Working Environment

  • Physical tasks include sitting, standing, bending, lifting (up to 50 pounds), and pushing/pulling carts (up to 500 pounds).
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are required.

Internship Details

  • Hours: 15 hours per week
  • Duration: Two years or until completion of the Master’s degree, whichever comes first.
  • Hourly Rate: $19.74 per hour
  • Benefits: None
