Description

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Visiting Scientist Program is offering 10-week summer internships for undergraduate and graduate students.

Location
The internship will take place at the TSL, located at the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City, NJ.

Provisions
Stipend based on academic status:

  • Undergraduate student: $1,100 per week
  • Master's degree student: $1,300 per week
  • Doctoral degree student: $1,450 per week

You may receive a Housing Allowance and dislocation allowance if your permanent address is at least 50 miles from the hosting facility.

Security Clearance
You must have or be eligible to obtain and maintain DHS suitability for the duration of your appointment.

Appointment Details

  • Duration: 10 consecutive weeks, May–September 2025 (considerations for class schedules, housing, and lab schedules).
  • Appointment: 40 hours per week, on-site.
  • Health Insurance: Interns must have coverage during the appointment period and provide proof prior to the start date.

Administrative Notes
You will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment. Compliance with Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility is required.


About the Transportation Security Laboratory

The TSL is a DHS Federal Laboratory located at the William J. Hughes Technical Center in Atlantic City International Airport, NJ. As part of the Science and Technology Directorate, TSL’s core mission is to enhance homeland security by developing and validating solutions to detect and mitigate the threat of improvised explosive devices, with a focus on protecting the nation's civilian air transportation systems. TSL’s staff includes physicists, chemists, engineers, and mathematicians recognized internationally for their expertise in advancing explosives detection technology from conception to deployment.

Qualifications

To be considered, applicants must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen (dual citizens are ineligible).
  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of application.
  • Meet one of the following academic conditions:
    • Undergraduate: Enrolled full-time at a U.S. accredited college or university in physics, chemistry, mechanical or electrical engineering, mathematics, or similar.
    • Graduate: Enrolled full-time in a relevant field at a U.S. accredited institution.
