Harvard University Archives Internship
Dates: June 2 – August 2, 2025
Summary of Work Assignment and Responsibilities:
The Harvard University Archives (HUA), as the primary repository for Harvard’s records and related personal archives, holds hundreds of hidden narratives. As the institution approaches its 400th anniversary, this internship focuses on uncovering and promoting these narratives to provide a more comprehensive understanding of Harvard’s history and connect its rich cultural community to these stories in meaningful and engaging ways.
The Harvard Library Diversity Intern at the HUA will research, curate, and contribute to HUA’s exhibition program, celebrating diversity within its collections and the broader Harvard community. This work supports faculty and students in their research, teaching, and learning while providing the intern with valuable professional experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The intern will collaborate with the Associate University Archivist for Community Engagement (AUACE) to design a project that aligns with their values and perspective. The project will focus on embracing diverse perspectives, promoting access, and amplifying historically marginalized voices.
Key responsibilities include:
- Researching, curating, and developing content for the HUA exhibition program.
- Increasing awareness of collection materials that support Harvard’s teaching, research, and learning.
- Delivering a concrete project outcome, such as:
- CURIOSity Exhibit Page: Research, curate, and develop a digital CURIOSity site highlighting diversity in collections.
- Physical Exhibition Vignettes: Create new vignettes for the semi-permanent Harvard Lives exhibition.
The intern will gain in-depth research skills, familiarity with new technologies, and experience working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Qualifications:
Basic:
- HS diploma and current enrollment or completed bachelor’s/master’s degree in History, Communications, Art, Library or Museum Studies, or a related field.
Additional:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated attention to detail and strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
- Experience in archives, museums, local history, or cultural heritage institutions (preferred but not required).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information.
- Interest in diversity and inclusion initiatives.
- Flexibility and ability to adapt as priorities change.
- Previous internship or office experience (preferred but not required).
Physical Requirements:
- Must remain stationary 50% of the time.
- Occasional movement within the office to access files and equipment.
Work Location and Environment:
- Based on-site in Cambridge, MA, with the possibility of a hybrid work model compliant with Harvard University policies.
- Work location is determined by each department and may vary.
- Work is performed in an office/library setting.
Compensation and Benefits (Common for All Harvard Library Internships):
- Travel Costs: Covered up to $1,000, including two bags of luggage each way (coordinated by Harvard Library).
- Housing: Double occupancy in a campus-designated apartment (includes bedding, linen, kitchen utensils, and WIFI). Interns are responsible for toiletries and groceries.
- Hourly Pay: $18/hour for 30 hours per week, totaling up to $4,320 (taxable).
- Professional Development: Biweekly opportunities provided.
