Purpose of the Position

The Law Library Associate assists customers of the Law Library and Resource Center—including members of the public, attorneys, judges, and judicial staff—in accessing resources that facilitate participation in court proceedings and the justice system.

This is a court-classified position reporting to the Director, Law Library. The position works under general supervision and does not have supervisory responsibilities.


Essential Functions

  • Manage the resource center’s inventory of court forms and informational packets for self-represented litigants.
  • Assist users in locating and utilizing Law Library services, including legal forms, websites, databases, and print materials.
  • Operate a cash register, maintain a cash fund, secure cash at closing, and prepare deposits for the treasurer’s office.
  • Train staff on cash management procedures and resolve related operational issues.
  • Serve as a tech liaison, troubleshooting equipment and point-of-sale issues with vendors and IT.
  • Maintain the resource center’s display of brochures and community resource handouts.
  • Open and/or close the Law Library and Resource Center following established procedures.
  • Provide research assistance and recommend new library purchases to the Director, Law Library.
  • Assist with judicial library material distribution and respond to requests from incarcerated individuals for legal resources.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Library acquisitions policies, cataloging principles, and classification systems (e.g., Library of Congress).
  • Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, Publisher, PowerPoint).
  • Legal research resources and integrated library systems (e.g., Westlaw, Hein Online).

Skills:

  • Strong customer service skills and ability to establish positive working relationships.
  • Effective communication in person, over the phone, and in writing with diverse audiences.
  • Operation of office equipment, such as photocopiers and cash registers.
  • Navigating online databases and legal information systems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in library science, law, paralegal studies, or a related field OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience approved by Human Resources.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Fluency in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of legal research and terminology.
  • Experience in a legal or library setting.

  • Physical Demands: Office environment; may require lifting materials/equipment up to 20 lbs.
