Position Highlights:

The African American Museum of Southern Arizona (AAMSAZ) at the University of Arizona seeks a dynamic and community-focused Director to lead operations, fundraising, and educational programs. The Director will build on the museum’s significant achievements, drive growth, and ensure sustainability.

As the face of the museum, the Director will engage with the community, manage partnerships, curate exhibits, and support African American history and culture in Southern Arizona. The role reports to the AVP of Research Centers & Institutes and supervises one direct report and interns.


Responsibilities:

  • Operations & Programming:
    • Lead daily operations within the annual budget.
    • Oversee staff, volunteers, and day-to-day activities.
    • Manage partnerships with municipalities and community partners.
    • Develop systems for fundraising, financial, and administrative operations.
    • Curate exhibits and maintain artifacts.
  • Fundraising & Revenue Growth:
    • Implement an annual fundraising plan.
    • Identify, cultivate, and steward donors and partners.
    • Secure grants, write proposals, and generate additional revenue.
  • Educational Programming:
    • Design lessons for K-12 audiences based on exhibitions.
    • Educate visitors on museum content.
  • Strategic Leadership:
    • Collaborate with the Board of Directors to implement a multi-year strategic plan.
    • Support the growth and diversification of the Board of Directors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent advanced learning through professional experience.
  • At least 8 years of relevant work experience or a combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with volunteers and engaging diverse populations.
  • High cultural competency and experience in multicultural settings.
  • 3+ years of nonprofit leadership and management experience.
  • Experience working in museums or curating exhibits.
  • Educational programming experience in a K-16 environment.

Compensation:

  • Salary Range: $59,404 – $74,254 (commensurate with experience).
  • Grade Range Minimum: $59,404
  • Grade Range Midpoint: $74,254
  • Grade Range Maximum: $89,105
