CCCL Library Intern

Deadline

Library Internship Description:

City Center for Collaborative Learning (City High School and Paulo Freire Freedom Schools) are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic school library intern to join our team and gain hands-on experience in the field of library science at the middle and high school level.  This internship is ideal for students currently enrolled in a Library Science program.

The school library is a living collection of titles in fiction, nonfiction, Spanish, and bilingual reading materials with approximately 10,000 books. The school supports students in grades 6 through 12. Over the last few years we revamped our PFFS-University campus library and have started a similar process for our downtown campus (City High School and PFFS-Downtown).

During the 2022-23 school year, a Library Steering Committee met to plan the roll-out of our Downtown library.  During this time we:

  • Conducted a site review to assess where a library could be
  • Transformed classroom space so we currently have a mutli-media library space on the ground floor of 47 E. Pennington, easily accessible to both our middle and high school students
  • Adopted policies and procedures
  • Curated our library collected to emphasize high-interest young adult readers, along with some classics and specialized collections (graphic novels, poetry, plays)
  • Adopted an on-line collections management system which allows us to keep track of our collection and offers easy check out to students.

We worked with a terrific UofA intern last fall who helped us get much of this work done. It’s been a great start - we are excited to keep the momentum going and build on the work we have done to date.

The successful candidate will coordinate with the Library Committee to assist with a range of tasks related to library management.  Key responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting students in grades 6 through 12 in locating reading materials for learning and enjoyment
  • Assisting with collection development, including the selection and acquisition of new materials (particularly helping us with our nonfiction collection)
  • Helping to create and maintain the library’s online catalog and circulation system
  • Supporting library programming, including book clubs, author visits, classroom curriculum engagement, and other literacy-based initiatives such as Banned Books Week
  • Upholding the library’s mission, policies, and procedures, as well as professional library standards and best practices including intellectual freedom and the ALA Library Bill of Rights

Candidates for this position should be enrolled in a Library Science program or have completed their degree within the past year.  They should have excellent organizational and communication skills, as well as a strong interest in collaborating with student and parent volunteers.

The internship is unpaid, but offers a valuable opportunity to gain practical experience and make meaningful contributions to the school community.  We are committed to providing a supportive and engaging learning environment, and will work closely with our intern to ensure a positive and enriching experience.

If you are looking to kickstart your career in library science and make a difference in the lives of students, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity.
