ASU Library’s Open Science and Scholarly Communication division seeks interns interested in gaining experience in areas of librarianship related to open scholarship, including: scholarly publishing, research data curation and sharing, copyright and fair use, open access/open education/open data, digital repositories, indigenous data sovereignty, research impact/bibliometrics, and related research support. The interns will network with researchers, researcher support staff, librarians, information professionals, and other library interns.
Depending on interest and experience, the interns will work on projects such as:
- Assist in event planning for outreach and advocacy event planning, such as Love Data Week and Open Education Week,
- Evaluating, describing, and uploading scholarly articles, research data, or other related works into our institutional repositories,
- Creating and/or updating learning objects, LibGuides, and other instructional materials on open science and scholarly communication topics for specific target audiences, such as researchers, instructors, and students.
- Planning and developing learning objects targeting undergraduate and graduate-level researchers on open scholarship, research data, and scholarly communication topics.
- Working with liaison librarians, other library interns, and Library Communications personnel to promote researcher support services.
- User testing for researcher support tools, guidance, and documentation
This internship position is intended to provide an opportunity for interns to design their own experience. Flexibility in project assignments and areas of focus will be determined in consultation with their supervisor. The preferred areas of interest or focus will determine which supervisor the intern will report to. All interns in the Open Science and Scholarly Communication division will work collaboratively with each other and both supervisors on related projects.

Program Learning Objectives:
- Gain experience in a growing area for library and information professionals.
- Gain practical project experience in an academic and professional library environment.
- Develop an awareness of the open science landscape, including: scholarly publishing, open access, open data, open education, research incentives and impact, citizen science, etc.
- Develop an awareness of the research lifecycle.
- Understand basics of copyright and fair use in educational situations.
- Understand basics of creative commons licenses.
- Understand the basics of licensing research data.
- Complete open scholarship certification and other professional development opportunities.
Skills required:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Project management and communications experience
Graduate level internship
This internship particularly applies to students working towards the University of Arizona iSchool’s Digital Curation certificate or equivalent program. All students interested in learning more about library services related to open science, research data management and sharing and scholarly communication are welcome to apply.
Location: This is a hybrid or remote position. The intern supervisor is located at ASU's Hayden Library, Tempe campus. https://lib.asu.edu/locations/hayden
This position is open to students currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited MLS program. Recent graduates will also be considered. Course credit is available for students in accredited MLS programs.
