Summary

The Research & Instruction Librarian (day) provides instruction, research support, and reference services for Midwestern University students, faculty, and staff, and pursues opportunities to expand library participation across the Glendale, Arizona campus. The position reports to the Academic Services Manager. Full-time hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM, with flexibility to shift schedule to meet teaching, committee, and other user needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach classes to support the teaching curriculum including, but not limited to, course integrated library resources introduction, research skills, and information literacy instruction
  • Cultivate collaborative relationships with teaching faculty to facilitate enhanced student learning
  • Consistently engage in campus-wide opportunities to promote library services
  • Provide research support for faculty and students
  • Collaborate as part of team of librarians to take advantage of technologies to support and expand library services
  • Provide research (reference) help in person at the service desk as scheduled, as well as by phone, appointment and email
  • Participate in maintenance of library resource guides on library website
  • Maintain awareness of current trends in health and life sciences information resources, teaching and learning pedagogy, and relevant best practices
  • Other duties may be assigned

Education and/or Experience

  • Master’s degree in Library/Information Sciences from an ALA-accredited institution
  • A minimum of 1 year experience providing reference in the health sciences
  • Experience providing library instruction in both formal and informal settings
  • Experience working in a team and customer service oriented environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Computer Skills

  • Computer proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), health science online resources, and experience with citation management programs

Language Skills

  • High skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information to top management, and boards of directors.

Reasoning Ability

  • High skills: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Mathematical Ability

  • Basic skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to interpret bar graphs.
