Master of Arts in Library and Information Science graduate, Student Success Award winner and JustArts Fellow Riqué Duhamell Escobedo on who gets to be a maker, the inaugural InfoSci Voices feature.

When Riqué Duhamell Escobedo arrived at the University of Arizona to pursue the Master of Arts in Library and Information Science, they expected to focus on the traditional rhythms of graduate school: research papers, readings and classroom discussions.

Instead, one question helped reshape their experience: Who gets to be a maker?

Riqué, a Spring 2026 graduate, Student Success Award recipient and JustArts Fellow, is featured in the first installment of InfoSci Voices.

In the video, Riqué reflects on how their time at the university expanded their understanding of creativity, community and what it means to build spaces where people feel they belong.

"Alongside expanding what is considered making, I also wanted to lower the barrier to who gets to be a maker," Riqué says. "Making doesn't have to mean mastering high-tech machines."

Riqué's story introduces InfoSci Voices, a new video series spotlighting the people, ideas and experiences shaping the future of information science.

Through conversations with students, alumni, faculty and industry partners, the series explores the many ways the InfoSci community defines, challenges and elevates what information science means today. Told in the first person, each story gives viewers the opportunity to hear directly from the people behind the work—in their own voices.
